As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, a growing challenge for development teams has been the isolation of AI-assisted work. According to Bradley Axen, Block’s head of AI Capabilities, Buzz was born to help streamline this disconnected workflow. The goal was to move AI interaction from a one-on-one experience into a shared, transparent workspace. Buzz replaces individual team communication tools with a unified workspace that offers Slack- and GitHub-like channels, direct messages, voice, code and workflows.

“The instigating idea was that we had every person going and working with an AI tool, kind of in private, and we were spending all of our time coordinating between people as they went and worked off in a silo with their AI,” Bradley Axen, Block’s head of AI Capabilities, told SD Times in an interview. “We wanted a workplace, a workspace where people could come in to one service and have like multiple people working with a lot of different AI agents to go kind of build products together, do the code not as like an isolated conversation with these like long handoffs, but like actually make decisions with the humans and then translate that into the prototypes that we’re all going to test out.”

Buzz traces back to Goose, an open-source project Axen authored about a year ago. While Goose focused on low-level technical infrastructure that enabled AI to code or edit documents, Buzz signals a shift toward higher-level collaboration. After testing a Slack-based prototype called Builderbot earlier this year, the team recognized users wanted a model where personal agents could operate within a shared conversation, allowing everyone involved to see the work as it unfolds.

Giving agents an identity

Buzz is notable for its approach to agent identity and memory. Rather than having anonymous bots generating comments, Buzz provides each agent with a distinct identity. This is powered by the Buzz relay, a back-end system that handles message exchange and stores memories accumulated during work sessions, Axen said.

“One of the things that we’ve been putting a lot of work into is that the Buzz relay . . . stores memories, so the bots can have memories that they accumulate as they work with you,” Axen said. “So you can just tell it how you want it to work with you. It can also learn our systems . . . And so, what we actually kind of see people doing that’s been very valuable is growing bots into different roles. So they’ll have more than one. So I might have two or three agents that I work with regularly, and one of them is the one that I use to do most of the work, and another one is more of a QA.”

This identity-driven approach also solves the lack of transparency, because in previous models, bots would appear without context, creating confusion. Through a simple, in-app configuration, Buzz changes this.

“It’s not like you’re going off into an admin panel and like working with your IT team to make a new bot and bring it to the company,” Axen noted. “Just in a few clicks in the app, you can just say, ‘Okay, I’ve got a new bot. This bot works on my behalf, and we actually have the cryptography path to show that that bot is owned by you in a durable way.'”

Built on Nostr protocol

To ensure this technology remains open and accessible, Buzz is built on the Nostr protocol, giving humans and agents a cryptographic key pair ensures that individuals and communities can run the software independently of any centralized host. Buzz replaces individual team communication tools with a unified workspace that offers Slack- and GitHub-like channels, direct messages, voice, code and workflows.

“If we were just building a tool that we were going to run only for Block Inc., we wouldn’t really necessarily need to use a protocol like this,” Axen explained. “But because we’re using Nostr, that means that anyone else outside of Block can run this software, and people can connect to whoever is hosting it, and they’ll have the same identity in each of those systems.”

Looking ahead, Axen indicated the development roadmap for Buzz focuses on tightening the integration between AI decision-making and production workflows. Axen highlighted the integration of Git and code management as the next major milestone.

“The next step to me is streamlining the way those decisions get into the downstream systems. So, like for us, for example, the key part of that is code and Git,” said Axen. “We’re looking at all of the workflows that we would normally have used a tool like GitHub for, and seeing if we can just have those approvals and updates happen as part of the conversation.”

As for the broader AI landscape, Axen emphasizied that providing open-source options to users is essential for ensuring AI aligns with human needs.

“I think, especially with AI, we’re figuring out how you make as many parts of the stack open source as possible,” Axen concluded. “I think that’s so valuable for making sure that the people are getting what they want out of these systems because they have options.”
